Significant rock fall was not unusual upslope from the site of this beautiful home built on a former mining claim. Rock fall barriers are often used along Colorado highways, but the usual methods were not feasible here because of the steepness. The homeowner installed two fences of cable mesh supported by steel H posts up from the home site. The back of the house and the roof were reinforced as an added precaution in case the fences did not stop all falling rock. The roof structure, described by the builder as a “fortress,” is timber trusses covered with six-inch thick timbers, four inches of rigid insulation, a layer of 5/8-inch sheathing, and heavy steel roofing.
